NVFS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteers play an integral role in the mission of Northern Virginia Family Service to empower individuals and families to improve their quality of life. Northern Virginia Family Service volunteers are people of all ages and backgrounds who share their interests, time, talents and commitment to giving back to the community in which they live. All volunteer opportunities are on weekdays during business hours unless otherwise noted.

Special Foster Care needs volunteer mentors. Mentors provide 5 to 18 year old-children with support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement and constructive example. Minimum of 2 hrs per week for a period of 1 year is required. * 3 female mentors are needed in Loudoun, Stafford, Lorton and Fredericksburg.

Sponsor-a- field trip for middle school children: Our LEAD (Leadership, Education, Achievement, and Diversity) program provides services to at-risk students from low-income immigrant and refugee families at Glasgow Middle School. We need a group of volunteers who can sponsor and chaperon field trips for 15 students either one time, monthly or quarterly. The goal is to provide students the opportunity to improve their social skills, self-control, and decision making; as well as to reinforce positive appreciation for self and others.

The Clock Tower Thrift Shops in Centreville and Falls Church, VA are open 7 days a week during day and evening hours. We need individuals and groups of volunteers to help us unpack and sort winter clothes, toys and holiday items. Volunteers (not younger than 16) will also greet and assist customers. It is a great way to help foster Care children, as the proceeds from the store supports our Special Foster Care and other programs at Northern Virginia Family Service. Court ordered- volunteers are welcome. URGENT!

Painters and Construction Workers: Professional construction workers/painters needed to paint a small house in Prince William. Small group of 4-6 volunteers can do the work in 1 day. URGENT!

Adopt-a-house on a regular,one-time or occasional basis (Monday to Thursday, or Saturday). We are seeking volunteer groups to provide basic home and yard maintenance, and repairs to 8 homes in our Transitional Housing program in Woodbridge, VA. Youth groups must be accompanied by an adult and should be age 13 or above.

The Multicultural Human Services Program of NVFS offers free ESL classes to adults. In Spring 2009 classes will last from February to May. We need teachers and substitute teachers. No certification or experience required.
