Tobacco
Use Prevention Program for Youth
Tobacco Use Prevention Program for Youth (TUPPY) is an education-based
program that teaches groups of young people about the negative
consequences of drug use and the benefits of a drug-free lifestyle.
The program uses the Too Good For Drugs (TGFD) curriculum,
which focuses on developing personal and interpersonal skills
to resist internal and external pressures to use drugs. The
students learn from interactive skills-building activities
that include goal setting, decision-making, bonding with others,
identifying and managing emotions, and communicating effectively.
Students who complete the TGFD program will: 1) show improved
social, emotional and resistance skills; and 2) report a higher
perception of drug use as wrong, risky or harmful; report
a decrease in perception of drug use as acceptable/cool; and
report a higher perception of drug use as not the norm and
not a positive behavior.
Since July 1, 2002, we have provided anti-tobacco classes
to nearly 4,600 students in Fairfax and Arlington Counties.
We are looking forward to bringing our expanded program to
more than 600 youth throughout our community in the coming
project year.
